Roses are red, violets are blue, February is here…. Which means Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! Like, right around the corner. Like, less than two weeks around the corner. Are you ready?
Valentine’s Day has been around since the 14 century. Its history is as varied and convoluted as you might expect. However, at its core, the holiday is all about love.
And in today’s fast-paced world, isn’t it nice to have a day celebrating love? A day to say “I love you” out loud to those who mean the most? A day to shower our special people with tokens of our love?
We think so too.
Unfortunately, most modern Valentine tokens are brimming with sugar and preservatives. Be it a heart-shaped box of chocolates or a candle-lit dinner for two, today’s edible expressions of love are quite toxic.
How did we get to this state? Well, let’s take a step back.
The modern version of Valentine’s Day celebrations got its start in the late 1800’s. During this period and into the early 20th Century, society was primarily agriculturally based. People farmed. They raised animals. They made their own food. Staples like sugar and flour were precious commodities. Commercially made candy and chocolates? Those were rare treats.
As the Valentine’s Day norms evolved to incorporate commercially made candy, chocolate, and fancy food, the rarity of these items made receiving them a significant gesture, a true sign of esteem and affection. However, they were once-a-year experiences. Their sugary ingredients didn’t severely impact people’s health.
In today’s world candy, chocolate, fancy desserts, and what-have-you are commonplace. We can get these things every day of the week. We’re bombarded with them.
Which begs the question: Are these commercially created foods an adequate expression of our love?
We’re going to vote no.
For one, the fact that these desserts and treats are so prevalent in our food landscape negates their specialness. These items have become mundane. That’s not what Valentine’s Day is all about. Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to be extraordinary, imaginative, unusual.
Second, as we mentioned above, the traditional Valentine’s treats are laden with highly processed sugars and preservatives. They’re toxic. Given that we rely on commercially made foods for our primary nutrition source, and these foods are also teeming with sugars and preservatives, the traditional Valentine’s foods are adding more nutritional fuel to the fire.
